Traditions of Wallenpauck:</br>Whispering Secrets
Traditions of Wallenpauck:
Whispering Secrets

By Helen M. Cooke.
Revise ed. 1995. Originally published 1910; 1926. Softcover booklet, 4x5, 45 p.
Subtitled “Tales and Lore of the First Settlers,” this is an epic poem originally published in 1910. Author Helen Cooke of Hawley was proud of her heritage, and wrote about the long-ago days of the broad and fertile Wallenpaupack River Valley, known to the native Americans and the settlers who arrived there in the late 1700s. The area in her day was faced with upheaval, as work commenced to dam the river and create a lake for generating hydroelectric power. She revised the book in 1926 when Lake Wallenpaupack was finished. Photos for the book were taken by her cousin, Isobel Williams.
